Abraham Lake, located in Alberta, Canada, is a large artificial reservoir. During the cold winter months, methane gas forms ice bubbles that get trapped in the lake’s clear ice. My original goal was to photograph the sublime mountains using the frozen bubbles as a foreground element, but I quickly became mesmerized by the myriad of minimalistic small details that revealed themselves everywhere. Realizing the potential for a comprehensive series, I spent the next three and a half days photographing under extremely challenging conditions, including early morning temperatures of minus 37 degrees Celsius and exceptionally high winds. My aim was to capture the ever-changing moods of Abraham Lake. The varying conditions provided excellent photographic opportunities, and I sought to convey to the viewer the diverse nature of this extraordinary ecosystem.
