The Belastingdienst/DUO building in Groningen, designed by UNStudio and completed in 2011, appears in this photograph as an almost weightless, sculpturally shaped structure.
The softly rounded, streamlined silhouette almost dissolves the massiveness of the high-rise, lending the building a calm, futuristic presence. Subdued colours, clean façade bands and the isolated presentation against the open sky draw the eye to form, rhythm and proportion. Thus, the building is experienced less as an administrative building and more as an abstract architectural symbol.
