Although it’s hard to believe, this really did happen. I spend a week in Antarctica living in a tent camp near the emperor penguin colony. The adult birds often accompanied us whenever we stepped outside our tents. That’s why, when I set out to photograph the plane that brought us to the camp, I expected the penguins to follow me. Positioned squarely before the plane, I observed one of the penguins wadding toward it, stopping in the perfect spot beneath the wing.T he scene surpassed any vision I might have imagined.
