Fragments of Silence – Michael Sonntag

HONORABLE MENTION IN LONG EXPOSURE

Michael Sonntag

Title:

Fragments of Silence

Description

Fragments of Silence explores the quiet presence of abandoned wooden structures emerging from still water landscapes in western Poland.

Captured during calm, fog-filled mornings, the series focuses on the fragile balance between decay and stillness. The long exposure technique reduces the environment to its essential elements, dissolving distractions and allowing the structures to stand as silent witnesses of time.

Each image isolates a moment where nature slowly reclaims what was once built, transforming functionality into abstraction. The recurring motif of broken piers becomes a visual language of impermanence, absence, and quiet transformation.

Rather than documenting a place, the work reflects a state of mind — a contemplative space where silence, minimalism, and subtle tonal transitions create a sense of timelessness.
