Hokkaido – Veronica Gray
HONORABLE MENTION IN LANDSCAPE
Veronica Gray
Title:
Hokkaido
Description
The images focus on capturing the relationship of water, light, shadows, and texture and influenced by recent trips to Japan and workshops addressing Japanese aesthetics.
For me, light has always been an integral part of composing and making a photographic image. Combined with texture, light is the magical component albeit challenging to capture. “We find beauty not in the thing itself but in the patterns of shadows, the light and the darkness, that one thing against another creates… Were it not for shadows, there would be no beauty.” (In Praise of Shadows by Jun’ichiro Tanizaki.)
I aspire to draw upon the delicate balance of simplicity and complexity and the interconnectedness of all things so that reality and abstraction may converge, capturing not just what the eyes perceive, but what the soul feels.
