The images in this series were taken at the old harbour in Bo’ness. The harbour was a major port in the 18th century, mainly for the local coal industry but was closed in 1959 with the decline in the mining industry and closure of the nearby railway. The harbour is now disused and full of mud and silt into which discarded shopping trollies have become embedded. As the harbour is tidal these trollies become visible at low tide but become completely submerged at high tide, so timing is critical in capturing the trollies in a semi-submerged state. They are photographed from above from a footbridge that crosses between the harbour and adjacent dock, which allows me to gain an almost aerial viewpoint to shoot from. I use ND filters and experiment with slow shutter speeds to smooth the water out and give it a concrete or freshly plastered wall appearance into which the trollies have been sunk.
