Background & Discovery
On my way to a New Year gathering, I found myself waiting outside a subway station when something caught my eye — a wall of glass bricks forming the station’s outer facade. Inside, the station lights were pushing through each individual brick, casting a quiet, rhythmic grid of luminance into the cold night air. The discovery was entirely accidental. One moment I was waiting; the next, I could not look away.
Theme
Lightwall explores the overlooked aesthetic order embedded in urban infrastructure. The repetition of glass bricks and the light bleeding through them create a visual language of geometry and stillness — a stark contrast to the noise and movement of the Lunar New Year celebrations surrounding it. Neither the light nor the wall alone is the subject. The subject is the moment light passes through.
Intent
Cities are full of unintentional minimalism — structures built for function that quietly achieve beauty. This image is a reminder to slow down, to linger in the pause between destinations, and to notice the order that exists just beneath the surface of everyday life. Lightwall was not planned. It was found.
